Unintended ~ A Mini Haphazard

If there's one part of the quilting process that I hate more than anything ... it's loading a quilt onto the longarm. After quilting Modern X, I realized since Modern X isn't a very big quilt, I have a little bit of room to put another quilt on there! That's what I call a freebie, since I didn't have to load it.

The only quilt top I have that actually fits is my mini Haphazard quilt that I made late last year. I named this quilt Unintended because it truly was unintended. The fabric came out of my Rock Star quilt, because I made a mistake reading the instructions and ended up cutting twice as much of the black and white fabric as I needed. The fabric was too special for me to put aside, so I made them into half-square triangles and then loaded up my Haphazard generator to get a nice 36" x 36" arrangement.

For the first time ever, I decided to try matchstick quilting on my longarm. Nancy from Grace and Peace Quilting had previously given me some advice for how to do it, and I'm very grateful, because otherwise I would have totally messed it up! Just like free-motion is not as hard as it looks, matchstick quilting is not as easy as it looks.

Matchstick quilting isn't particularly exciting to do, but there's a sort of zen-like calm to it. I think it turned out really well, and I'm very happy with it. It is so striking, and the quilting adds such a lovely texture. I'm not sure yet where it will go, but I think it will look great hanging up in my quilting room!

But after making this quilt, I realize that I really want another black and white Haphazard quilt, except throw-sized. I guess I'll have to do that one soon.

  1. Your "freebie" quilt is stunning, and I love the matchstick quilting. Can you please share how you did that on the longarm? I have an APQS machine like yours, and I completely agree that nothing is ever quite as easy as it looks! You did a great job on this one.

  2. I do think that matchstick quilting gives an amazing texture and is a very zen kind of quilting to do on a longarm. I look forward to seeing a larger version of Haphazard!

  3. I love the look of matchstick quilting, and it looks fantastic on this quilt. Unintended really rocks - it has a bit of a Libs Elliott flare, I think. It's going to look great on your quilt room wall!

  4. I love how matchstick quilting looks, but oh boy does it take a long time. A mini is a great place to do it! Very handsome little piece :)

  7. Whoever thought that matchstick quilting is easy should be forced to use it on a king size quilt. You may not have had to load it, but that wonderful quilting removed it from the "freebie" category. The black and white fabric choices are great, but the quilting raises it to a whole other level.

  8. Haphazard and those great fabrics - a total win! I love matchstick on my longarm and it really is quite fast - faster than on a domestic machine. One day I will use that generator - it is a fun program!

  9. Beauty from ashes!!! If I can call your duplicate HSTs ashes! That's a little bold of me, but that was my thoughts as I read your quilt story. Awesome job on the matchstick quilting!!! Perfect frosting on the (quilt) cake! I'm getting excited to do a Haphazard--it's on my 2020 quilt resolution list and is coming up.

    1. Sorry, I can't find the pattern I generated, I must have tossed it after I made it. I know it's a 9 x 9 layout, with either 4" HSTs or 2" HSTs.

  11. Well thanks anyway I do love it so and figured out on for myself. You do such great work. Would you by any chance know the name and fabric line you used for the white in your 3rd haphazard quilt?
