Haphazard

Haphazard is a modern pattern made of randomly generated half-square triangles of 2 different sizes. Here is a sample:

This pattern is part of my collection of dynamic patterns. Instead of telling you the exact layout, you get to choose your colors and various options and have the computer randomly generate a pattern for you.

1: Choose the finished size of your block. Each block is made of either one large half-square triangle or 4 small half-square triangles.

2: Choose the # of blocks for your quilt.

3: Choose up to 10 foreground colors.

4: Choose up to 10 background colors.

5: Choose the ratio of small triangles to big triangles. 0 means all small triangles, and 100 means all big triangles.

6: Click to generate your layout as many times as you want. Once you're satisfied, click to save it.

  6. Love it! I've been looking for a pattern to use with donated fabrics, and I think I'll use your program to calculate the cutting. I might just use the "pull a block out of a paper bag" method for the actual layout, though :)

  14. Hi Liz, I've just tried to use your pattern generating for Haphazard and I don't seem to be able to chose the colours or generate a pattern. I've done this many times before. Is there something different I should be doing.
    Thanks Linda cozy-quilts.ca

  17. Hi Liz! I love this program. Is there a way to make the layout longer than wider? i.e. 6 x 8, 8 x 10, etc?

  18. Hi Liz, was wondering if this great program can also generate longer than wider layouts? (4 x 6, 5 x 7, 6 x 8, etc.)

  20. Hope you see this, I know I am a little late coming to the site. Would you be willing to share the size and amount of squares you used with making haphazard with the fabric "declassified" also the finished size. I just love it and have tried so many times to figure it out to no avail.

    1. The final size of that quilt was 36 x 36, the half-square triangles are either 2.5" or 4.5", unfinished. (4" and 2" finished). That's all I remember, I don't have the diagram anymore.

  21. I just blogged about making your haphazard quilt - while totally outside my comfort zone with respect to randomness I found it fun to make and loved being able to generate a pattern until one "spoke" to me. Thank you for sharing this pattern generator.
