Renegade Bag

Some girls like shoes, but I've always been a bag lady. After making some pouches and totes, I'm super proud to say that I've finally made a handbag that I'm proud to carry for my everyday life!

I first discovered the Renegade Bag designed by Sara Lawson of Sew Sweetness while watching Sara's Sunday night live shows, and I was immediately drawn to it. It looked structured and professional, and I especially loved the cork details she used. The next day, I bought the pattern and ordered some cork from her website. But it took me months to start work on it because I was afraid.

When I did start sewing this bag, there were parts where I just had to grit my teeth and power through it. For the most part the cork isn't harder to work with than quilting cotton, but when I was assembling the bag, it was pretty hard. By the time I finished assembling the exterior of the bag, I was sweating even though my sewing room is colder than the rest of the house. But once I'm finished, I think it was worth the effort because the cork is truly the best part of this bag!

I had on hand a few bag tags so I attached them to the sides of the bag with rivets. (Which honestly are a little big for the tag but oh well!) For an extra little touch of hardware, I attached a little zipper pull that says "I solemnly swear that I'm up to no good." (I'm a die-hard Potterhead!)

I'm so in love with this bag and I can't wait to carry it!

  1. Hi Liz! This bag looks like it is for sale in a store, you did such a great job. I am not a bag person - haven't carried one in 40 years. But I do need to make one for my sister-in-law so I will certainly keep your model in mind! Happy Friday! ~smile~ Roseanne

  6. I have a nice supply of cork but haven't used any of it yet; fear, I guess. Your bag looks terrific and just like something I would purchase in a handbag store! Great job Liz!

  7. What a great looking bag! I do agree that it looks so professional. I love that there are so many more accessories available that make these things a bit easier. I haven’t worked with cork, yet, but everyone seems to llike it. You are one courageous cookie taking on these complex bags. I love bags, but make fewer and fewer. Yesterday, I even packed a few away inside a larger bag. I don’t change them as often as I used too. I think it is a function of not having so many different places to go - sports practices, games, etc. so life requires fewer things.

  8. I have a thing for bags, and collect patterns and kits of them. Haha. They are not in my UFO stack, but probably should be. You did a great job on this, Liz! It looks so professional. Love the bag tag - haha!
