The Macabre Mini

A few weeks ago, I was making a pinwheel star quilt and when I completed this block, I realized the birds that were all cut up and juxtaposed next to each other just looked kind of ... wrong. So I tossed it to the side and forgot about it.

Then one day, I came to my sewing room and saw it, and decided I might as well make my first mini quilt. Since I haven't done walking foot quilting for almost 2 years, I figured this was a good opportunity to play with it since the quilt is very small. I quilted lots of echo lines and I really like it!

My favorite part of this quilt is the binding. I found a leftover piece of binding from another quilt I made and it was the perfect length for this mini. Putting the binding on made me rather dizzy because of the tiny black/white strips, but once it's done, I love how it pops!

Maybe it's finally time to begin that mini quilt wall.

  1. Your echo quilting is beautifully done! This would be a great start to a mini quilt wall! The nice thing about mini quilts is you don't have as much time invested in each one and don't feel so bad about switching them out every so often and replacing them with something else. I'll bet you learn something new with every project you make no matter how tiny. Or at the very least, hone a rusty skill! :)

  4. Liz, whether you are long arming or walking footing, your quilting always makes my heart sing and leaves my eyes happy :) That stripe binding is just perfect framing this mini. I say keep bringing on the minis...they are fun size.

  6. I like the variation of the quilting in the star vs the echo in outer edges. And, I do like that striped binding!

  7. Hi Liz,
Your quilting looks impeccable in this piece! I love the echo stitching that all points to that wonderful star in the center. That striped binding is also the perfect finish and it has to make you smile - it does me. A great finish and so worthy of some other mini friends joining it. ~smile~ Roseanne

  10. Love the binding and the mini! My mini wall is on a closet door with the clothespin type 3M hangers, in case I ever need to move it. I have another silly space in my studio that may start getting a few more. It is really fun to see them up! And they make nice table toppers too.

  11. I see why you thought the cut up birds were a bit off putting, but the mini works! Great use of the block.
