Tangerine Dreams

I have gotten into the habit of putting quilt tops away after I'm done with them and not taking them out to quilt until at least several months have passed. I call it marinating, and somewhere, somehow, I hope that ideas can come to me for how to quilt it as I'm happily doing something else. Another benefit of marinating is that once the quilt top isn't so fresh, I will have become detached and hence less afraid to mess it up during quilting.

And that's exactly what happened for Tangerine Dreams. I pieced this top several months ago, and since this is a quilt of my own design (using the dynamically generated pattern Haphazard) I felt extra pressure to make the quilting really good. But last week, while idly browsing through some photos in my library, I suddenly got a vision in my head of how I wanted the quilting to go. So, it finally got quilted!

I wanted to try something on this quilt that I never tried before: lots and lots of straight lines. However, I wanted them to run in different directions, so in the orange spaces, I quilted straight lines running in horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines that run parallel to one of the seams.

In the gray / white spaces, I started introducing curvier designs, and I did a lot of feathers and continuous flowers. I also added one design that is a pretty new one for me, but which I really have fallen in love with: wavy lines.

And last but not least, in all the big open white spaces I did a feathery swirl. It's my first time trying this design as well, and I'm happy that it seemed to turn out well!

My mom asked for my first Haphazard quilt and took it to Shanghai with her. I've been wanting one of my own since, and now I have one. This one I'm keeping! It totally goes with my decor, doesn't it?

  7. I love this quilt so much and when I saw the first photo, I had already picked the block with the wavy quilt as my favorite. There is so much to love about this quilt. Funny I was thinking about your Haphazard pattern today and thinking I need to start mine. I can tell when I do make mine, there is no way my quilting is going to come close to looking like yours.

  8. I keep scrolling back up to look at the quilt in your house (perfect!). My quilt tops get put aside too so they can marinate. I'm not telling how long one has been marinating! Haha. Nice work on the quilt and the quilting, Liz!

  14. Hi Liz! Oh that little snapshot in the Bloglovin' email pulled me right in. What a beautiful finish!! And I knew right away it was from your Haphazard program. OMG - does this go with your decor or what. How stunning it looks on your couch and with that red chair in the background - that shot could be on the front page of a magazine. And your quilting looks superb. I've run out of descriptives to use so I'll just have to end with an I LOVE IT. ~smile~ Roseanne

  15. Love the wavy lines quilting. It is fun when plans work out - letting a quilt rest until you are ready to finish it properly, and you sure did on this one.

  16. Your quilt is gorgeous! I made one quilt using your haphazard pattern. I am still in the middle of quilting it. I don't dream the result will be as harmonious!
Funny this pattern can lead to so different results!

  18. My quilt tops have to marinate too! If not, they would all get simple cross hatching just so I could be done with them. Love your quilt and your quilting choices!

  19. I just looked at your blog for the first time and I love your Urban Mod and Tangerine quilts. The patterns and colour choices are great but I'm completely blown away by the quilting, its phenomenal. Could you give any pointers on techniques, machines etc? I'm just off to look at some more blog posts so maybe I'll find dome there. Thanks for sharing your lovely quilts.

    1. Thank you very much! My free-motion quilting wasn't attractive at the beginning and through a lot of practice they got better and better. Sorry I don't have a better answer than that. I will say though that I have learned a great deal from watching other free-motion quilters quilt on YouTube, such as Angela Walters and Natalia Bonner. As for machines, I do have a longarm, but I started on a sit-down machine.
